Growth, mortalities and yield per recruit of the shrimp fish scad Alepes djedaba (Forskal) (F. Carangidae), from Abu Qir Bay, Eastern Alexandria, Egypt OceanDocs
El-Sayed, H.Kh.A..
Growth and population dynamics parameters of Alepes djedaba as an exotic carangid fish species from Red Sea into the Levant Basin of the Mediterranean Sea, were investigated. Fish samples were obtained from purse-seiners operating during the day time from Jan. to Dec. 2003 in Abu Qir Bay, Eastern Alexandria. The results obtained show that back-calculated lengths (based upon otolith readings) for the first; second and third age groups were 10.38; 15.4 and 19.32 cm TL respectively, the estimated Bertalanffy growth parameters were L∞=33.29 cm, K=0.2473 and t0= -0.51. The Length-weight relationship was represented by the formula: Log W=-1.9245+2.9762 Log L. Total mortality (Z), natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality (F) were 1.85; 0.62 and 1.23...

Health Status and Health Care Access of Farm and Rural Populations AgEcon
Jones, Carol Adaire; Parker, Timothy S.; Ahearn, Mary Clare; Mishra, Ashok K.; Variyam, Jayachandran N..
Rural residents have higher rates of age-adjusted mortality, disability, and chronic disease than their urban counterparts, though mortality and disability rates vary more by region than by metro status. Contributing negatively to the health status of rural residents are their lower socioeconomic status, higher incidence of both smoking and obesity, and lower levels of physical activity. Contributing negatively to the health status of farmers are the high risks from workplace hazards, which also affect other members of farm families who live on the premises and often share in the work; contributing positively are farmers’ higher socioeconomic status, lower incidence of smoking, and more active lifestyle. Both farm and rural populations experience lower...

Herpesviruses associated with mortalities among Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, in France-Comparative study ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan; Le Deuff, Rose-marie; Cochennec, Nathalie; Maffart, Patricia.
Sporadic mortalities were reported in june and july of 1992 and 1993 among batches of hatchery-reared larval Pacifie oyster, Crassastrea gigas, and at the beginning of July and in August of 1993 among five batches of 3-7 month old young spats, C. gigas. Observations with transmission electron microscope showed the presence of herpes-like virus particles in infected larvae and young spats. The viruses observed in diseased larvae and affected young spat oysters were very similar. Elevated temperature and crowding may increase susceptibility of oysters to these herpes-like virus infections.

Hypoxia increases susceptibility of Pacific white shrimp to whitespot syndrome virus (WSSV) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lehmann,M.; Schleder,D.D.; Guertler,C.; Perazzolo,L.M.; Vinatea,L..
The present study aimed to evaluate the mortality, reactive oxygen species production (ROS) and total hemocyte counts (THC) of the marine shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei infected with the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) at three levels of oxygen saturation. For this, 360 shrimp (20±2g) were distributed in 24 tanks (60L), divided in two groups (infected and non-infected), which were subjected to 30, 60 and 100% of dissolved oxygen saturation (in quadruplicate). During 96 hours after infection, daily hemolymph samples were collected for hemato-immunological parameter evaluation (THC and ROS) and dead animals were removed and computed to assess cumulative mortality rates. In the infected group, animals subjected to 100% saturation showed higher ROS production...

The phenomenon of summer mortalities of the Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas is observed in France since the beginning of the 90's. These mortalities are classically associated to younger stages and summer temperatures and occur during the reproduction period of the animal. The studies undertaken during the project Morest (2001-2005), showed that a number of biological and environmental risks, the interaction of them induces lethal stresses for animals in physiological weakness, exists in summer. Among these risks, that which is withstood by the oysters bred close to the sediment proved to be significant in intertidal areas. In Quiberon bay (southern Brittany, France), the breeding practices of sowing oysters in deep water is thus likely to expose...

Impact of a power plant cooling system on copepod and meroplankton survival (Bahía Blanca estuary, Argentina) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Hoffmeyer,Mónica Susana; Biancalana,Florencia; Berasategui,Anabella.
The impact of a power plant cooling system in the Bahía Blanca estuary (Argentina) on the survival of target zooplanktonic organisms (copepods and crustacean larvae) and on overall mesozooplankton abundance was evaluated over time. Mortality rates were calculated for juveniles and adults of four key species in the estuary: Acartia tonsa Dana, 1849 and Eurytemora americana Williams, 1906 (native and invading copepods), and larvae of the crab Chasmagnathus granulata Dana, 1851 and the invading cirriped Balanus glandula Darwin, 1854. Mean total mortality values were up to four times higher at the water discharge site than at intake, though for all four species, significant differences were only registered in post-capture mortality. The findings show no...

Incidences des épisodes d'efflorescences de micro algues toxiques sur les écosystèmes et sur les pêcheries de coquillages en baie de Douarnenez ArchiMer
Thebaud, Olivier; Veron, Gerard; Fifas, Spyros.
The commercial fishery for wedge clam, or telline (Donax trunculus) in the bay of Douarnenez in France started in the early 1980ies. During twenty years, the activity has developed, from an opportunistic fishery, into a regular fishing enterprise for 36 fishermen, who derive from it most, if not all, of their revenue. The fishery is nowadays strictly regulated. It is subject to natural variations in the productivity of clam stocks, in relation with meteorological conditions which can strongly affect the stocks. The bay of Douarnenez has been experiencing regular blooms of harmful algae, both of species leading to shellfish poisoning for human consumption, such as Dinophysis (Diarrhoeic Shellfish Poisoning) and Pseudo-nitzschia (Amnesic Shellfish...

Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1 μvar) infection has caused significant mortalities in juvenile oysters (Crassostrea gigas). In contrast to the practices of other animal production industries, sick and dead oysters are not separated from live ones and are left to decay in the surrounding environment, with unknown consequences on fluxes of dissolved materials. A laboratory approach was used in this study to test the influence of oyster mortality episode on dissolved inorganic fluxes at the oyster interface, dissociating (i) the effect of viral infection on metabolism of juvenile oysters and (ii) the effect of flesh decomposition on oxygen consumption and nutrient releases at the individual scale. Nine batches of juvenile oysters (Individual Total wet weight...

Insecticidal activity of venomous saliva from Rhynocoris fuscipes (Reduviidae) against Spodoptera litura and Helicoverpa armigera by microinjection and oral administration J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Sahayaraj,K; Vinothkanna,A.
Rhynocoris fuscipes is a potential predator of many economically important pests in India. In the present study, its venomous saliva (VS) was collected by milking and diluted with HPLC grade water to different concentrations (200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 ppm). Microinjection of Rhynocoris fuscipes VS was more toxic than its oral administration in Helicoverpa armigera (cotton bollworm) and Spodoptera litura (tobacco cutworm). Thus, R. fuscipes VS was found to be toxic to third instar S. litura and H. armigera with respective LD50s of 846.35 and 861.60 ppm/larva at 96 hours after microinjection. The current results showed that VS of Rhynocoris fuscipes caused mortality of H. armigera and S. litura. Active peptides from VS may be isolated, identified and...

Institutions and Demographic Responses to Shocks: Wuttemberg, 1634-1870 AgEcon
Guinnane, Timothy W.; Ogilvie, Sheilagh.
Simple Malthusian models remain an important tool for understanding pre-modern demographic systems and their connection to the economy. But most recent literature has lost sight of the institutional context for demographic behavior that lay at the heart of Malthus’s own analysis. This paper estimates a short-run version of a Malthusian model for two Württemberg communities from 1646 to 1870. Württemberg differed institutionally from the northwest European societies analyzed in previous studies. The impact of institutional differences shows clearly in differing demographic reactions to economic shocks. Mortality was less sensitive to shocks than one would expect, while nuptiality was especially sensitive.

Is nosocomial Escherichia coli bacteremia a predictive risk factor for mortality? BJID
Tuon,Felipe F.; Rocha,Jaime L.; Guadagnin,Fernanda A.; Alves,Márcia S..
The objective of this study was to determine risk factors associated with mortality in patients with nosocomial Escherichia coli bacteremia from January 2009 to January 2011. In a retrospective study the medical records of 88 patients over 18 years with nosocomial bacteremia caused by E. coli were analyzed. In univariate analysis several risk factors, including chronic renal failure, altered mental status, leukocytosis, and higher Charlson index of comorbidities were associated with mortality. In multivariate analysis only altered mental status remained independently associated with mortality. Mental confusion can be a risk factor for mortality in patients with E. coli bacteremia.

Total osmotic metabolism and reproduction, have been recorded. It appears that youngest individuals are particularly sensitive to low salinities (7 ppt.). Intermediary ones are more resistant nevertheless salinity does not improve neither survival nor growing. Copulation, laying and pleopod egg fixation are particularly affected by salt waters. The only promising application of salinity parameter on astaciculture could be whether prophylactic or curative treatment with concentrated...
